The University
Located 15 miles outside Washington, D.C., George Mason boasts
its own educational, artistic, and cultural offerings and
programs as well as its proximity to the capital city's resources
and research libraries. George Mason has its own world-class
arts center that serves as the venue for renowned performing
artists. Free tickets are available for nearly all performances.
In addition, a professional theater company in residence at
the university produces original works by living playwrights.
The faculty and students of the writing program form a key
part of the Washington metropolitan area's active literary
community. The campus hosts almost a dozen readings each year
by faculty members and noted guests. Faculty are active in
such organizations as PEN/Faulkner, which annually awards
its prestigious prize in fiction, and the The
Association of Writers & Writing Programs, which recently
moved its national headquarters to the campus. Students write
for and edit several nationally circulated literary magazines.
