Section Information for Spring 2020
This poetry workshop is a place where a poet listens to intelligent and generous readers read and often misread a poet’s work. We will want to consider what conventions traditions, forms, methods, modalities, rhetoric, genres, and lexicons the poet embraces and/or rejects. Our purpose is to describe as best we can for the poet the work we see the poet doing in the given poem. Our purpose is not to talk poets out of their project or to convert them to our aesthetic, but to offer commentary that honors and challenges the attempt and ambition of each poem that comes before us. More than praise or complaints, such readings and mis-readings show the poet how a diverse readership gives shape to its encounter with the poem and in what ways the poem’s medium is shaping itself.
