Section Information for Fall 2018

This course focuses on International Literature and the idea of the Global Novel.  Taking its cue from Goethe's vision of World Literature, the course will examine what that term means, who are its practitioners, with discussions around some of its representative texts.  The course examines related topics such as the Regional Novel, the National/Nationalist Novel, the Postcolonial Novel, and the Travel Novel.  Other important topics raised are: Language and Translatability; are some these like Religion, War, Migration, intrinsically more transcendent of time and place?  How do these themes capture the global zeitgeist more than other local themes?  Authors include: Sarah Hall, Chinua Achebe, Mohsin Hamid, Teju Cole, Jumpa Lahiri, etc.
