ENGH 495 - 001: Capstone and Thesis

Capstone and Thesis for BFA in Creative Writing majors combines workshop experiences with professional development lectures.

This course allows students to synthesize what they have learned during their work in the BFA program, provides guidance in research methods that will benefit them as they complete the capstone and plan their futures, and conducts workshops while they make final revisions to the manuscripts developed in the course of their degree work.

In short, this course is about deepening your understanding of craft, refining portfolio pieces, and discussing matters related to professional development.

Learning Goals

At the end of the course, students will

-- understand the significance of a final-form writing sample and appreciate the full weight of the steps involved to produce it;

-- have prepared a collection of original work(s) in a chosen genre having worked under the supervision of a faculty member and with constructive peer feedback to discover ways to edit, revise, and re-consider both previously written material and newly created material in order to amass a well-crafted final submission;

-- have delved into the work of a favorite author to explore how that writer’s work informs their own;

-- know what resources are available to them as they identify possible future directions (academic and/or professional);

-- written an Artist Statement and Query Letter;

-- and have submitted revised manuscripts as part of their final portfolio.

ENGH 495 001 enrollment is controlled. Contact Professor Wilhelm at gwilhelm@gmu.edu for permission to register.
