Section Information for Fall 2021
This course explores storytelling through the medium of audio drama. Students will listen to assigned radio plays, serials and fiction podcasts, and weekly discussions will focus on many of the same elements we consider in written texts, including characterization, dialogue and plot. We will also examine how the medium might differ from work that is meant to be read, including sound effects, techniques that suggest “the visual”, and pacing. While we will start with a few examples of audio drama from the 1940s-1960s, the course focuses primarily on contemporary “fiction podcasting” and will likely include Limetown, The Amelia Project and Forest 404, among others. Weekly writing exercises will help students prepare for their final project: Episode 1 of their own fiction podcast.
