ENGH 617: Poetry Writing Workshop

ENGH 617-004: Poetry Writing Workshop
(Spring 2019)

04:30 PM to 07:10 PM M

Section Information for Spring 2019

This is a general workshop intended for candidates for the MFA degree in poetry and for others who are seeking a community in which to write and think about poetry at a high level of engagement. As in any workshop, we will strive for discussions that are civil, professional, and focused on analyzing a poem rather than judging it. Outside the classroom, we are free to choose and to create our own communities. Inside these walls, we share a responsibility to approach and understand all kinds of poems on their own terms. In this sense, a workshop is for learning to read, as well as to write. In addition, you will be asked to select (individually) a week in the first six (before Spring Break) for an Intensive Writing Week, in which you will commit to writing for twenty hours. If this is truly impossible, even with prior planning, see me about variations--including an option to choose a week before the semester starts. We may also use class time to discuss campus readings & visiting poets, the MFA exam process, norms of submission and publication, and other matters that concern you as poets or as students.
