ENGH 685-001: The Short Story

M 4:30pm-7:10pm

The short story has had a feisty year, from the viral sensation of Kristen Roupenian's "Cat Person" to the politically engaged fictions of Joseph O'Neill and Carmen Maria Machado. In this course, we will explore a broad range of stories in an attempt to discover the narrative tricks that make each one a unique and vital piece of art. We will also attempt to connect the dots between writers. How is Machado in conversation with Angela Carter? How might the old masters inspire new remixes? Students will respond to readings through occasional writing exercises and by composing their own short stories.
