Preparing to Apply

Each year, students from around the world will seek the 34 positions in our MFA Creative Writing Program (12 each in fiction and poetry, and 10 in nonfiction). The most important factor in gaining admittance is the portfolio of original writing and it is here that our Selection Committee focuses the majority of its attention.

Suggestions as You Prepare to Apply

Plan ahead. It takes time to collect the supporting documents necessary to apply. Please also keep in mind that all documents should go to the College of Humanities and Social Science's Admissions Office, NOT the English Department. International applicants should apply 30 days prior to the January 2 deadline. Please see our admissions site for International Requirements.

Read some faculty work before you apply. You can find biographies and faculty reading samples on our Faculty Page. Compare our faculty to those at other programs and ask yourself which writers you would most like to have help you develop your craft.

Visit Mason and attend an open house event in spring 2017, dates TBA. You can find out more about Graduate Admissions by attending one of our Graduate Information Sessions and Campus Tours.
