Scott can also provide information about the publishing minor and about the spring Stillhouse Press course.
Stillhouse Press is looking for volunteer manuscript readers this semester to help us choose the next set of books we publish, and our 2025 Kickoff meeting (over Zoom) is coming up at 11am on Monday, January 20 (MLK Day). This experience makes for a great resume item and the workload is low and flexible, though there are certain minimum requirements.
Stillhouse Press is an independent nonprofit small-press publisher housed within GMU's English Department and staffed by alumni of and students in our MFA, MA, BFA, and BA programs. Our primary aim is to provide learning opportunities through applied experience in the art of craft publishing, to include the act of soliciting, acquiring, producing, and marketing work from independent authors. In the last two years alone, Stillhouse has contracted seven manuscripts--one book of poetry, one novel, two story collections, and three novellas—thanks to the committed efforts of first readers like you!
This semester, we’ve already received more than 150 novel submissions and expect at least 100 more! If you'd like to learn more about us as a press, please visit our website: www.stillhousepress.org
During our annual kickoff meeting, the entire staff of Stillhouse meets to discuss our current submissions opportunities, and the expectations we have of readers. There is no obligation to read for us if you attend this meeting and find Stillhouse doesn't fit in with your other commitments. But please come out and encourage other book-loving friends to join!
